Android’s September Security Patch is beginning to hit the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+ on AT&T’s network as part of an update that has been made available starting today. AT&T notes that they are beginning to push the software out to both smartphones as an over-the-air update, although it’s possible that not all users with either of these phones will see the update today. Having said that, users who haven’t been alerted to the new software can always check for the update manually by navigating to the settings menu, then to about phone and finally by tapping on software updates.
According to the details on AT&T’s support website, the download file for the software on the Galaxy Note 5 is listed at 431MB, while the software update for the Galaxy S6 Edge+ comes in at a slightly lighter size of 405MB. Despite these somewhat lower size files compared to the update files for Marshmallow from Android 5.1 lollipop, users are still recommended to download the updated software via a local Wi-Fi connection if possible, and to make sure that there is at least 50 percent battery available on the device before attempting the download.
While the September Security Patch is sure to be one of the more (if not the most) important factors of this version of software, it is not the only change that comes along with it, as AT&T’s support pages list off various tweaks for each device. In addition to the security patch, both phones will have support for Wi-Fi calling on AT&T’s network following the update, and Advanced Messaging will be supported as well which will bring along an enriched messaging experience for subscribers. AT&T mentions that users will need to be on a current version of software that ends in PG1 or PH4 before they can update to the software that was released today, and if not, subscribers will need to go through with updating their device software until they are on a version that ends in those letters. As noted above, if the update alert has not shown up in your status bar, you can always check for the update availability manually, otherwise it might just be a waiting game.
