Google’s Photos app has been available out there for almost a year now. The company had officially launched this app back in October last year, and according to the Google Play Store, the app has been downloaded somewhere between 500 million and 1 billion times thus far. The app managed to become quite successful really fast, which is not all that surprising considering it offers free photos and videos storage, though it crops your images / videos, but Google’s algorithm is so good that it’s really hard to tell the difference between a 21-megapixel original image and the 16-megapixel cropped one (for example). This app has been getting better and better ever since it was announced, as the company has been updating it quite frequently, and yet another such update just landed, read on.
Google’s new Photos update actually brings the app to version 2.0, which indicates quite a large update, right? Well, not really, Google did add a new feature in there and rearrange some things, but nothing major took place here. Now, the aforementioned feature is quite useful, and many people wanted Google to introduce it, so that’s something, right? Google has added the permanent sorting options for albums, which gives you some options when it comes to sorting albums. You can now sort pictures and videos in your albums chronologically (as they were taken), and by that we mean ‘oldest first’ or ‘newest first’, while you can also put ‘recently added’ images to display first. Now, some of you might say that this option was already available within the app, well, it was, but the changes were not permanent, you could sort images, check out what you need and then the order would go back to the default setting. That’s not the case anymore, obviously. Now, do keep in mind that the ‘custom mode’ will be selected if you did not set any of the options manually, and also, once you change settings within an album, there’s no going back, the app will remember the order you selected, until you select some other sorting option, of course.
In order to access the new album sorting options, you need to open the edit mode for a particular album by clicking the overflow menu, and selecting ‘edit album’. After you do that, you’ll notice a pair of arrows in the upper right corner, tap that and you’ll get access to sorting options. Google has also improved the UI a little bit, when you’re dragging photos from one location to the other, a small badge indicator will inform you how many images have you selected. Google has also rearranged some options within certain menus, but nothing to write home about.
