Garmin is a well-known name in the smartwatch and fitness tracker industry so it’s actually surprising that the Kansas-based company hasn’t already made a product designed specifically for children; something like the picturesque Alcatel CareTime. In any case, the US consumer electronics manufacturer finally took notice of the fact that some parents are willing to get their kid a fitness tracker as it has introduced Vivofit Jr. Like its name suggests, this wearable is a part of Garmin’s Vivofit line of trackers which is by far the most accessible fitness product series currently offered by the company. The device is capable of tracking sleeping patterns, steps, and generally does everything you’d expect from a smart band.
In addition to being a fitness tracker, Garmin states that Vivofit Jr. is also designed to function as a portable motivator which will encourage kids to move more and do their chores. The device’s companion app features some gaming content intended to entertain its young users as it presents them with a gamified version of the traditional daily step challenge and various educational content in a colorful wrapping. Apart from that, the app also boasts a built-in activity tracker for parents which allows them to quickly check out what their offspring has and hasn’t been up to. Parents even have the option to assign tasks to their children via the app and leave it to Vivofit Jr. to remind them about completing them. For added incentive, a reward note can be attached to each task for the kids to see. Vivofit Jr. is waterproof, boasts a one-year battery life, and generally seems like a solid device for its $79.99 price tag.
This kids-friendly wearable can already be purchased at Best Buy and Target while Walmart, Toys”R”Us, Dick’s Sporting Goods, and a few other retailers will have it in stock before winter. Though it’s likely that Vivofit Jr. will eventually make its way to Europe and other regions, the company has yet to make an official announcement in that regard. If you’re looking for something a bit more luxurious than this cute little wearable, the recently released Garmin fenix Chronos will be right up your alley, provided you can afford it.
