While smartphones have remained the main growth engine for the consumer electronics sector over the past few quarters, smartwatches have continued to struggle to gain any kind of traction in the global smart wearables market with cheaper fitness trackers dominating the segment in most regions around the world. However that fact is not discouraging various tech companies from releasing new smartwatches, as can be seen from the spate of announcements and launches at various trade shows over the past few months. A new name that has now joined the list is Bangalore-based Indian consumer IoT startup, Witworks, which has now announced its first smartwatch, Blink. The device was unveiled at the seventh annual TechSparks summit in Bangalore earlier today, and is being credited as being the first-ever smartwatch from an Indian company.
The watch comes with Android 5.1-based Marvin OS, and will be offered in three different variants – Classic, Sport and Steel. Each model will be offered in two different color options – Black and Silver. The Classic Black is the most affordable of the lot, and comes with a price-tag of Rs. 12,499 ($190). The same device in Silver would set you back by Rs. 13,999 ($210). The Sports Silver is priced at Rs. 12,999 ($200), while Sports Black would cost Rs 13,999. Finally, the Steel variant would cost Rs. 15,499 ($230) and Rs. 15,999 ($240) for the Silver and Black models respectively. Although the prices are bit on the higher side when compared to offerings from Chinese and Taiwanese companies, the company is offering a 10% discount for early birds who pre-book the device as part of the company’s introductory offer that will be valid thru the weekend.
Taking a quick look at the form factor and tech specs of Blink, the device sports a circular black dial and has a button on its side. According to the company, the design is inspired by “celestial bodies and their motion through space and time”. It features a 1.39-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 400 x 400 pixels that’s protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The smartwatch is powered by a 1.2GHz processor and has 1GB of RAM alongside nine-axis motion sensors with advanced tracking algorithms. The device carries a 320mAh battery that the company claims will give it a two-day battery life.
