Consumers may still be getting used to the idea of smart watches and connected fitness trackers but the tech industry isn’t particularly interested in waiting for them and is constantly evolving and driving innovation. Wearables specifically are evolving more rapidly than ever and are adapting to new forms such as shoes, jackets, and glasses. Regarding the latter, while Google Glass may have failed to catch the average consumer, the idea of smart glasses is still something that many companies believe in as evidenced by the upcoming Google Glass 2, Snapchat’s Spectacles, and as of lately – VSP Vision Care’s Level glasses.
Namely, the said pair of smart eyewear has just been announced by the Californian not-for-profit vision insurance company. While VSP Vision Care isn’t exactly a well-known brand, this is the largest firm of its kind in North America as it provides vision insurance plans to over 60 million of people in the US and Canada. In other words, it has all of the necessary resources to join the wearable industry with its own product. Speaking of which, the frame of Level glasses sports a Bluetooth adapter, magnetometer, gyroscope, and an accelerometer. These components allow the glasses to not only sharpen your vision but also track your activity in all of the same ways a fitness band does. This latest example of smart eyewear will launch with a companion app which conveniently lists everything you need to know about your activity levels and is also capable of detecting the glasses once you inevitably misplace them so that you don’t have to spend half an hour searching for them before realizing they’re still on your head.
In addition to that, VSP Vision Care believes that the Level has a number of other potential applications as it can theoretically assist during eye examinations. Given how eye exams can be used to detect various conditions such as cataracts and diabetes, the makers of Level believe that their wearable is more than capable of identifying various diseases. Of course, provided it’s running adequate apps. Whether Level manages to fulfill its potential or not remains to be seen but we’ll presumably know more once these smart connected glasses hit the market in the coming weeks. Details on pricing and availability are yet to be announced.
