TomTom Announces New Fitness-Centered Smart Wearables

September is shaping up to be a great month for smartwatch and smart wearable enthusiasts, as a handful of companies have already unveiled their latest creations at IFA 2016 in Berlin, including Samsung and the Gear S3, the AMAZFIT Watch from Xiaomi’s sub-brand, and Fossil with the new Q series of hybrid watches. TomTom is now joining the party as well, with a new series of wearables, consisting of three models designed primarily for the outdoors.

TomTom’s wearable lineup is ready to expand with a handful of upcoming models, and the first new creation to make the list is the TomTom Touch, which is described by the manufacturer as the “world’s first fitness tracker to measure body composition and all-day heart rate from the wrist”. Needless to say this is a fitness band and it is equipped with a touchscreen and enough sensors to keep track of the wearer’s steps and calories burned, but unlike all the other fitness bands on the market, the TomTom Touch has the ability to measure the wearer’s ratio of body fat to muscle mass, and thus provide clearer information regarding the user’s overall fitness performance.

Next in line is the TomTom Spark 3 GPS Fitness Watch, which now comes with Route Exploration, a built-in heart rate monitor, and an on-board music player with 3 GB of storage, which should be enough to accommodate up to 500 songs. The timepiece allows users to track various physical activities including cycling, running, and swimming, and can even keep track of treadmill and gym workouts. The Route Exploration feature lets runners plan and upload up to 15 routes to the watch itself, and thanks to GPS connectivity the watch can trace routes, making it easier for the wearer to backtrack. The third model in the new series is called TomTom Adventurer, and unsurprisingly this wearable is all about outside activities and is “specifically made” for active people who enjoy hiking, trail running, and skiing or snowboarding. Of course, the TomTom Adventurer is equipped with GPS and all the other features of the Spark 3 but completes the package with a barometer, a compass, additional dedicated sports modes, and the ability to automatically detect slope runs and changes in altitude. All three new smart wearables will be available in stores this October. The TomTom Touch has an MSRP of $129.99; the TomTom Spark 3 Cardio + Music Bundle will cost $249.99, and the TomTom Adventurer will be available for $349.99.
