Ahead of its first live streaming NFL game, Twitter has released its live video app for the Amazon Fire TV, Xbox One and the Apple TV. Pretty interesting to see that the PlayStation 4, Roku, and Android TV are all absent at this time. However, that will likely change in the coming weeks. Twitter’s new app won’t just feature NFL games – of which there are 10 slated for this season – but it will also feature content from MLB Advanced Media, NBA, Pac-12 Networks, Campus Insiders, Cheddar and Bloomberg News. In addition to seeing the video, you’ll also see other Twitter content surrounding the content. This includes top Tweets, top Vines and Periscopes.
Twitter has opened this live streaming video to everyone. You don’t need to have a Twitter account, nor a pay TV subscription. All you need to do is have an Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV or Xbox One and an internet connection to stream the content that will be available from Twitter. Twitter’s chief financial officer, Anthony Noto stated that “these devices will bring Twitter’s live streaming video experience to life on the TV screen.” He continued by noting that Twitter has always been a great second-screen experience for TV, and sports. And now users can get that experience from their TV screen, instead of needing to use their app on their smartphone. “We’re excited to introduce this new experience to people, without requiring a paywall or having to log in to Twitter.”
In their press release on these new apps, the company noted that they will be available in select markets around the world. And it all depends on the platform. Apple TV will be available globally in the App Store. Xbox One will have the app available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mexico, the UK and US. While Amazon’s Fire TV and Fire TV Stick will have it available in just the US and the UK. If you don’t have any of these devices, you can pick up an Amazon Fire TV or Fire TV Stick and still have it in time for tomorrow’s Thursday Night game where the New York Jets head to Buffalo to take on the Bills.
