For a while now, Sony has been offering Xperia owners across various devices the chance to get their hands on preview software featuring the newest version of Android. Despite a recent shutdown and subsequent revival of the program, users can still get their fix of unreleased software through a special beta program offered to owners of certain devices through a Play Store app. It is through this program that Xperia X Performance users are now able to sign up for the latest beta program, which will net them an in-testing version of Sony’s software featuring Android 7.0 Nougat.
Users who choose to download the app and sign up for the beta program are warned that their phone will be running a preview software that may or may not be suited for daily use and may indeed contain a number of glitches. Should a user decide to go through with the program despite the warning, they’ll be presented with a screen where they can enter in some personal details and get themselves on a list of users to be considered for approval to update their phone with the work-in-progress software. Naturally, for privacy’s sake, users should assume that all or most activities while using the beta software will generate some sort of feedback for Sony.
The Xperia Beta Program app in the Play Store has been updated to accommodate Xperia X users, having previously only served Xperia Z3 and Z3 Compact owners. The app now features beta signups for Xperia X Performance owners as well, though there has so far been now word on when or if other variants will get on board. The timeline for when chosen users who applied through the app will be notified is also left vague, as is the date that the beta update will begin to roll out to those users. The beta is, for now, only available to Xperia X Performance owners in a selection of Nordic and European countries. As with other details about the service, when or if other countries will have the opportunity to get some beta love on their Xperia X Performance devices is not disclosed at the moment.
