There had been plenty of rumors about Amazon coming out with their own on-demand streaming music service. And now it’s finally available. Amazon announced this morning, that Amazon Music Unlimited would be available for just $7.99/month, that’s lower than many of its competitors, who typically charge $9.99 or more per month. In addition to that, Amazon is offering the service for $79/year for those that want to pay in advance and save a bit of cash. Amazon is also offering up a family plan for $14.99/month or $149/year, and finally there is a plan for Echo users that will cost you just $3.99/month. Another ploy to get you to buy the Amazon Echo, Echo Dot or Amazon Tap, and get you into their ecosystem.
Now this “on-demand” service means that you’ll be able to listen to just about any song at any time, instead of being forced to listen to whatever a certain station is playing. Like Amazon Prime Music currently does. There are no ads here either, so you’re getting basically what you would get out of Spotify, Apple Music or even Google Play Music Unlimited. The feature that Amazon is touting here with Amazon Music Unlimited is the tight integration with Echo. Allowing you to play music through these speakers, but also using Alexa to play whatever music you want to listen to, when you want to listen to it.
Those that are Amazon Prime members, this isn’t free or included in your subscription. But luckily, Amazon Prime Music is sticking around, at least for now. So this $79/year would be in addition to the $99/year you pay for Amazon Prime. Amazon does have all three of the major record labels in this new service, as well as hundreds of Indies available. So you may even find some music that is not available on other streaming music services, which is exactly what Amazon wants.
