Fido Celebrates 20th Birthday With Free Postpaid Data

Canadian cellular carrier, Fido, turns twenty next month and to celebrate it is offering postpaid customers 1GB of data over November and December. Eligible customers will receive an additional 500MB in November and a further 500MB extra for December. In order to enroll for the additional free data, customers need only text “GIFT” to number 2020 before midnight on October 24th. The offer is available for customers with multiple lines on Fido but sadly prepaid customers are not eligible. Furthermore, those customers lucky enough to have an existing data bonus, which is otherwise unavailable to the public, and those customers with an unlimited data tariff are ineligible. For customers considering switching to Fido, the company has confirmed that new activations for a normal postpaid plan, activated up to October 24th, will also be eligible – and better yet, new plans taken out from October 7th to October 24th are automatically enrolled into the bonus 1GB data offer.

This appears to be the first of Fido’s birthday offers for customers as the website explains the carrier is set to offer more gifts over the coming weeks, starting on October 25: in order to catch these offers, Fido recommends customers follow the company on one or more of their social media accounts, including the usual suspects of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and YouTube. Fido wants to recognize that their customers are loyal and some have been with the carrier since the early days: the business has changed a lot since the first GSM calls we being made and received on the 1900 MHz band. Fido has been one of the more advanced Canadian brands; it was the first GSM operator and the first to introduce the GPRS data service. Following the 2004 takeover from Rogers, Fido has been repositioned as a low cost carrier offering 2G, 3G and LTE service across the county.

Unfortunately, it is not clear what Fido’s other offers will be and there are no clues or hints on the Fido 20th anniversary microsite. It is possible that the carrier will be offering additional bundled minutes or perhaps a credit to put towards a new device. Hopefully prepaid customers will also end up being eligible for Fido’s planned offers and deals.
