When Samsung first announced the Galaxy Note 7 at its Unpacked Event, it was the first smartphone in the world to come with Corning Gorilla Glass 5, which is supposedly more resistant to scratches than its predecessor, Corning Gorilla Glass 4. However, a YouTuber named Zack who runs the channel “JerryRigEverything”, put the then new Galaxy Note 7 through his famous torture test which revealed quite disappointing results, especially when it came to the scratch test, where the display of the device was easily scratched using a pick of level 3 on Mohs scale of hardness. Corning itself then stepped in and disputed the results of the test.
In a turn of events, Zack has posted a new video on YouTube this time round to apologize for his previous Galaxy Note 7 video. According to Zack, the problem did not lie with the display of the device, but instead it was actually the fault of his Mohs scale testing tools. This occurred as he used a sharpening stone to sharpen his tools before performing the first scratch test on the Galaxy Note 7, and as he was using the sharpening stone, little fragments from the stone got embedded in the tip of his picks. The sharpening stone is made out of Aluminum Oxide and Silicon Carbide, both of which rank 8 or 9 on the Mohs scale of hardness. As Corning Gorilla Glass 5 is only supposed to be able to withstand scratches from a pick of up to a rating of 6 on Mohs scale of hardness, it was obvious that the glass scratched fairly easily in the first test, as the tools had fragments from the sharpening stone in them.
Also, in his latest video, Zack performs the test once again on a new Galaxy Note 7 with a new set of tools. True enough, the Corning Gorilla Glass 5 only started to show visible scratches when a pick with a rating of 6 on Mohs scale of hardness was applied. Zack also explains that it took nearly two months for him to come out with a video to correct his previous video as he was not able to do one sooner due to the official global recall of the Galaxy Note 7 which was carried out by Samsung. The new scratch test video may be viewed below.
