During its hardware keynote yesterday in San Francisco, Google announced Google Pixel and Pixel XL, the first two smartphones exclusively designed by the Mountain View-based tech giant. As this is a rather large change in Google’s approach to smartphones, it’s not surprising that the company’s marketing efforts are heavily focused on the fact that this device is “made by Google”, as we’ve been repeatedly reminded of. That fact has been specifically pointed out in the first Pixel commercial which aired a few hours ago and is also the focus point of “Life by you, Phone by Google”, the second Pixel commercial which just appeared on Google’s YouTube channel. Check it out in the video below.
Like its name suggests, the commercial does its best to illustrate the fact that Pixel is a Google-made device, not a result of collaboration with an Android OEM like the Nexus product line was. In addition to that, the video also does a good job of subtly stating that Pixel is a companion, an assistant, something that will help you in your everyday endeavors without changing them. This is implied as we’re presented with a series of short clips depicting people doing awesome stuff which we can’t exactly see completely due to a Google Search bar which transforms into a white rectangle, then a box, and then—you’ve guessed it—a phone. “A phone made by Google,” to be more specific.
It’s also interesting that this is the second Pixel commercial in a row which makes no specific mention of the Pixel XL. Granted, the two devices don’t differ a lot but they’re still not the same thing so it remains to be seen whether Google will continue with this trend of streamlined, universal commercials or whether the company also starts advertising the Pixel XL separately. For the uninitiated, Google Pixel boasts a 5-inch Full HD display and a 2770mAh battery while the Pixel XL features a 5.5-inch Quad HD screen powered by a 3450mAh battery. The larger device offers a significantly higher amount of pixels per inch—534ppi as opposed to Pixel’s 440ppi—so it’s a better choice for people interested in stuff like VR, though Google stated that both phones have been designed and built for Daydream.
