The OnePlus 3 is one of the best smartphones of 2016, thus far. This handset was introduced back in June, and it comes with a high-end build and high-end specs, while it costs only $399. OnePlus’ pride and joy has been available for open purchase (no invite system) this time around, and the demand has been so significant that the company had to stop selling the device in certain regions in order to be able to keep up (this had happened over a month ago, it’s available now). Now, the shortages of AMOLED panels are to blame for these delays it seems, as the OnePlus 3 comes with a 5.5-inch fullHD (1920 x 1080) Optic AMOLED display.
That being said, a rumor surfaced recently, saying that the company plans to stop manufacturing the OnePlus 3, and release an even more powerful variant of the device, the OnePlus 3 Plus. Now, this higher-end model was said to ship with the Snapdragon 821 64-bit quad-core SoC, a QHD display, and an LCD panel, instead of an AMOLED one included in the OnePlus 3 package. This rumor was somewhat hard to believe, and it seems like it was false altogether. The company’s spokesperson confirmed to Android Authority that the company is still manufacturing the OnePlus 3, which more or less denies a part of the aforementioned rumor. In addition to that, the company’s CEO, Carl Pei, shared something really interesting in OnePlus’ Forums, he basically wrote the following “AMOLED > LCD”. This is not exactly an elaborate response, but it definitely confirms that OnePlus has no intentions of building a new device (this year) which will ship with an LCD panel, as they seem to stand behind their choice.
LCD panels might be easier to come by these days, as more and more manufacturers are turning towards AMOLED displays, but AMOLED displays are considered to be the best ones around nowadays, and it makes sense OnePlus has decided to stick with their original choice. The OnePlus 3 Plus seemed far-fetched to begin with, and it looks even less probable now, it seems like OnePlus is going to wait until mid-2017 and release the OnePlus 4, while skipping the OnePlus 3 Plus, at least that’s what we’re expecting to happen.
