When Samsung first launched the Galaxy Note 7, it was the first phone in Samsung’s inventory to come packing an iris scanner for added security. With the plug now pulled on the Galaxy Note 7, Samsung will be looking ahead to its upcoming flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S8. There has already been countless rumors in the past few weeks that have been hinting that the South Korean company will most likely include an iris scanner and a dual-lens rear facing camera in the Galaxy S8. This is being done in a bid to cushion the financial losses faced by its component suppliers due to the demise of the Galaxy Note 7.
Now, it seems like Samsung’s suppliers are increasingly confident about the possibility that the company will include an iris scanner and a dual camera in the upcoming Galaxy S8. An anonymous official from one of Samsung’s component suppliers for the Galaxy S8 mentioned that Samsung never uses the same camera for its flagship smartphones each year, instead it upgrades the camera every year, so it is very likely that Samsung will adopt a dual camera setup for its flagship. The official went on to say that the inclusion of a dual camera setup will help the revenue of suppliers, as well as module makers increase, if not double. The dual camera lens will require more components from suppliers as it will have two separate camera modules, a mix of high-end and low-end products, as well as two lenses.
Among the companies which will benefit from the inclusion of these two features will be, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, a major supplier of camera modules for the Galaxy S8, and smartphone lens makers, including Sekonix. Kolen will also benefit from providing lenses for the iris scanner. It is expected that Partron and MCNEX will likely supply iris scanner sensors for the Galaxy S8, as both companies provided the biometric sensor on the Galaxy Note 7. However, Samsung has yet to confirm whether any of these features will be available on its upcoming flagship, so it is best to take these rumors with a pinch of salt.
