When it comes to smartphones these days, the camera quality has become more important than ever and remains a crucial element when consumers begin deciding what their next device will be. In regards to the smartphone camera, Google’s Pixel phones seem to be the most talked about right now thanks to their boasted quality and the rating they received from DxO Mark, so, we wanted to put the camera to the test and compare it to some of the other top-end flagships from this year as well as Google’s last-gen top-end phone, the Nexus 6P.
Before we get into the details of how each phone will be tested in different conditions, let’s go over the camera specs real quick. Starting with the Nexus 6P, Google used a 12.3MP main camera sensor with an f/2.0 aperture, laser autofocus, dual-LED flash with 1/2.3″ sensor size and 1.55µm pixel size. As for the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge, we’re looking at a 12MP main camera sensor with an f/1.7 aperture, phase detection autofocus, OIS, LED flash, 1/2.5″ sensor size and 1.4 µm pixel size. The LG V20 comes equipped with a Dual 16MP main camera with an f/1.8 aperture plus an 8MP sensor with an f/2.4 aperture, laser autofocus, LED flash, OIS, a 1/2.6″ sensor size for the 16MP sensor and a 1/3.2″ sensor size for the 8MP sensor. Lastly, the Google Pixel XL comes equipped with a 12.3MP main camera sensor with an f/2.0 aperture, EIS (gyro), phase detection autofocus and laser autofocus, dual-LED flash, a 1/2.3″ sensor size and a 1.55µm pixel size.
Now that the camera details are out of the way, the video below will provide some insight as to how each camera compares in a variety of shots and lighting conditions.
