GM Begins Manufacturing the Chevy Bolt, Beating Tesla Model 3

General Motors has been talking about the Chevy Bolt for quite some time now. They announced a few years ago that they would be bringing an all-electric vehicle to market with a price tag of under $30,000, after government incentives. And the Chevy Bolt fits that bill. It’ll start at just under $30,000, and of course you can add other features that will bring the price up a bit more.

Chevy is manufacturing the Bolt in a plant in Orion Township, Michigan. That’s not too far from their world headquarters in downtown Detroit. The Chevy Bolt is actually slated to go on sale in Oregon and California first, and at this rate, it may go on sale before the end of the year. This would put GM ahead of Tesla, because the Model 3 isn’t slated to start production until next year, after it was delayed. The Chevy Bolt does not require reservations like Tesla’s Model 3 does, which means you’ll be able to buy it like any other car on the market. The Bolt will also be used for Lyft drivers, as GM does have a pretty big investment in the ride-sharing company, and already allows drivers to rent cars from Maven to use for driving Lyft passengers around.

Right now, Chevy isn’t expected to sell a whole lot of Bolts this year. Especially since they just went into production this week, and it’s almost the middle of November, there’s just not much time left to move these cars. But it’s a car that’s going to be pretty popular next year, especially as car makers are moving forward with electric cars, and autonomous cars. The Bolt is a great car for self-driving, as it is electric, so there’s no need to fill her up with gas every so often. Additionally, it’s cleaner for the environment than a regular car is, running on unleaded.

What’s interesting to us about the Chevy Bolt is the fact that it’ll be the first all-electric vehicle to have Android Auto included. Chevy’s entire line already has Android Auto and Apple CarPlay and the Bolt will be the newest addition to that line. Meaning that users can jump in the car, connect their phone and start streaming music through the car’s audio system. As well as using Google Maps for navigation, instead of using Chevy’s own infotainment system. Definitely an exciting time, and it’s going to be interesting to see if the Chevy Bolt will be as popular as the Tesla Model 3 has already been.
