HBO GO is already available on quite a few platforms, including Android, Android TV, consoles, and now it looks like users will be able to add Daydream to the mix as the “unreleased” version of the HBO GO VR app has just hit the Play Store for compatible Daydream devices. Since the app is in unreleased status, it’s a beta version and may have some bugs and inconsistencies that users will notice, that being said the app can still be installed and it appears to work just fine, allowing you to enjoy all that HBO has to offer in a more immersive virtual reality setting.
Like other versions of the application, HBO GO VR will require users to attach the app to an account for their cable service provider, with which they’ll need to be subscribing to HBO in order to use it. Not too unlike the Play Movies app for Daydream, the HBO GO VR app places you in the middle of a theater setting where you’re watching the network’s content on a giant screen. Naturally, the picture quality is not going to be as crisp and clear as if you were watching this on your actual TV, but there’s something to be said for getting to watch content in virtual reality.
Since this is a Daydream app, users will be limited to experiencing HBO GO VR with Google’s Pixel phones or the Moto Z, but as more Daydream phones are released or support is added to more existing devices then the compatibility will open up. All the same shows and movies are available in this app as they are in other HBO apps and on HBO’s cable network channel, so you won’t miss out on anything if you choose to watch through HBO GO VR as opposed to HBO GO standard or HBO NOW. Since this is a Daydream app HBO may be looking to eventually add content that will be specific and unique to the experience, which would add some more incentive for users to watch content through this app as opposed to their other options, although HBO has not mentioned whether or not they plan to add such content.
