LG has been a bit weird with the V series smartphones. Last year, they launched the V10 in South Korea and then shortly after it came to the US. But it didn’t launch in any other country, and was only available on 3 of the four US carriers. For a smartphone that got glowing reviews from just about everyone, it was pretty puzzling to see the availability of that device. Then came the LG V20, announced in September, and launched by the end of October. But once again, it’s only launching in a handful of markets, none of which are in Europe. Which makes today’s news a bit stranger. LG has trademarked “V20 S” in Europe. Could this mean that a V20 variant is heading across the pond to Europe?
So far, there haven’t been any leaks about a LG V20 S. Making it tough to decipher what this trademark could be used for. However, there is the LG V34 that is sold in Japan. It’s smaller than the original V20, and is waterproof. That could be what is coming to Europe, if it does actually exist. It’s important to remember that trademarks are filed all the time, but they don’t always correlate to devices that actually see the light of day. So it’s important to take this all with a grain of salt for now. And since it’s for the “V20 S” it’s not likely that it would be the V series smartphone that LG will debut next Fall. As that should be the LG V30, if the current naming scheme continues. Either way, those in Europe that have been wanting to get their hands on the LG V20 may want to cross their fingers and hope this means good news for them.
LG has had a pretty interesting year, to be honest. They launched the LG G5 at Mobile World Congress in February. It received quite a bit of coverage from the press, as it was one of the first modular smartphones. But it didn’t turn out to be as good as everyone had hoped it would be. Then there came the LG V20. Which was essentially everything that everyone had wanted out of LG. But unfortunately the fact that it was announced well ahead of release, and is only available in two countries, made it tough for many people to get excited about it. Hopefully LG can close the year out on a high note and get ready for 2017.
