Video: Xiaomi Mi MIX Hands On

Doubtless you’ve heard about Xiaomi’s Mi MIX by now.  This is the nearly bezel-less phone that Xiaomi announced much to the surprise of many, and it’s sporting some pretty incredible features.  The most obvious of course is the screen, and while it’s not an ultra high resolution screen like we’ve seen on many flagship level smartphones in the past few years, it’s still a 2040 x 1080 resolution screen with a pixel-per-inch density of around 360.  That’s surely a far cry from the quad-HD density of around 550 pixels per inch that most high end Android phones have now, but given that the Mi MIX has a massive 6.4-inch display, there’s a reason the density isn’t quite so high.

The magic around the screen is the almost complete lack of bezels, or that part of the phone that normally holds things in place and hides important electronics behind the scenes.  Xiaomi has figured out a way to pack most of these components down near the bottom of the phone, much like Sharp did with its Aquos phones back in 2014, and as a result the Mi MIX with its 6.4-inch screen feels more like a phone with a 5.7-inch screen instead.  That’s some pretty incredible design to say the least, and it’s all made possible thanks both to Sharp’s own displays, and of course plenty of engineering know-how on Xiaomi’s part.

The overall spec list is nothing to sneeze at either, putting the Mi MIX at the top of the charts for the end of 2016.  Everything here matches up with what you would expect from a flagship device at this point in 2016, including a Snapdragon 821 processing package, choice of 4GB or 6GB of RAM, as well as choice of either 128GB or 256GB internal storage.  It’s even relatively cheap considering many of the other flagship devices on the market right now, with pricing starting at 3,499 Yuan ($516) for the 4GB RAM model and 3,999 Yuan ($590) for the 6GB RAM model.  What did we think of the phone?  Check out our video below to find out, and don’t forget to check out our Xiaomi Mi Note 2 hands on for Xiaomi’s other flagship phone coming out this year!
