This year’s Samsung Galaxy S7 series was a huge hit with consumers, even topping the iPhone 6S, Apple’s wildly popular flagship smartphone at the time, in sales in the US shortly after the device’s release. It offered a beautiful design, refined user interface, and wide range of useful software features. Months later, Samsung hit a significant setback with the Galaxy Note 7’s unfortunate battery issue; in order to win back the trust of their customers, the company will have to release an absolutely stellar device when they unveil the next Galaxy S phone, which is expected early next year. Not much is known about the Galaxy S8 at this point, but fortunately, DBS design has provided a stunning concept of their vision for what Samsung’s next flagship should look like to hold you over.
One idea featured in the video is a slide lock on top of the device that will deactivate the touch input on the edges of the display. This is an interesting idea, as the edges on some current Samsung devices can make them prone to accidental touches. Such an idea may prove impractical, however, if the user must constantly slide the lock back and forth. The video highlights four colors which include black, silver, gold, and rose gold. The physical design resembles Samsung’s Galaxy S7 Edge and Note 7, with a display that wraps around the edges of the device. In terms of specifications, the concept imagines the Galaxy S8 Edge to pack a 5.1-inch QHD Super AMOLED display, 6GB of RAM, a Snapdragon 835 processor, a 4,000 mAh battery, and an iris scanner.
Of course, it is important to note that this is simply a concept video, and its creators are not affiliated with Samsung, so this is certainly not a preview of the device itself, but rather an imagining of what the finished product could be. As with past concept videos, some of the ideas presented may not realistically account for today’s technology limitations. With that said, this particular video doesn’t seem too far-fetched when comparing the concept device with Samsung’s most recent offerings in the Galaxy line. If Samsung is watching, there are plenty of good ideas in the video that could be used for inspiration when designing the next generation’s Galaxy S handset.
