Ever since Google introduced Google Duo at Google I/O back in May, the Mountain View-based tech giant has been hard at work promoting its latest and greatest video calling app designed as a reliable tool for one-on-one video calls. The company’s marketing efforts were clearly seen in numerous high-quality video commercials for Google Duo. The ongoing Google Duo marketing campaign was designed to be witty and funny, as all of its ads so far have featured Doodles in a broad range of humorous scenarios in which they’re using Google Duo to communicate. In addition to putting a large focus on production values, the Google Duo campaign also invested in some good old celebrity promotion, as evidenced by the November ad featuring NBA stars Blake Griffin and DeAndre Jordan.
This Sunday, the Californian company debuted yet another Google Duo ad which is somewhat different to what we’ve seen so far. While the ad titled “Knock Knock from Santa” was designed to be funny just like its predecessors, it features no Doodles and was instead envisioned as a more authentic experience. Well, “authentic” as in it shows several kids chatting with Santa Claus using Google Duo, that is. As Google’s marketing team explained, the idea was to give children featured in the ad “a reason to believe in Santa.” The result of this relatively unique concept can be seen in the video below. In just over a minute and a half, Google’s marketing team does a good job of delivering a cute demonstration of what Google Duo is capable of. The ad specifically highlights the app’s Knock Knock feature which allows users to see who’s calling them, i.e. enables callers to start streaming video even before the person they’re calling answers.
In addition to being absolutely adorable, this video ad is also based on a rather clever concept. Namely, seeing how Google Duo is advertised as a simple and reliable app for one-on-one video calling, it’s smart to present it as an app that’s so simple that even small children can use it, which is precisely what Google has done here. Check it out for yourself in the video below.
