The Motorola DROID Turbo was first released back in October of 2014, and it sported the latest version of Android available then, Android 4.2.2 KitKat. Not long after that, it was upgraded to Android 5.0 Lollipop and the device has seen incremental software updates from time to time since then. However, over a year after Android 6.0 Marshmallow was first released, the DROID Turbo still hasn’t received the update to Marshmallow, that is until today as Verizon is now pushing the update to all DROID Turbo owners on its network. Through this new update, DROID Turbo owners will get the chance to upgrade their devices to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. This comes after Verizon tested the software for over a month, before deciding it is now time to rollout the update.
While it may not be an update to Android 7.0 Nougat, it is an Android upgrade nonetheless. The support page for the DROID Turbo on Verizon’s website hasn’t been updated regarding the new software update but multiple users in the US have reported that they are receiving the update already. The software update comes with the firmware version 24.81.5.en.US and it seems to be a rather large download (as expected, when moving to a new version of Android) as it will take approximately 25 minutes for your DROID Turbo to install Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow. New features in the update include Now on Tap, Doze mode as well as Wi-Fi Calling. The latest security patch from Google is also included in the update but the full changelog has yet to be released, so the full list of new features available through the update is not known yet.
As this update is being rolled out over-the-air (OTA), you will receive a notification prompting you to download and install the update. However, for that to occur your DROID Turbo’s battery must have at least 50% battery left. On the other hand, if you haven’t received this prompt, you could check whether the update is available for your device, and all you have to do is proceed to Settings, select About Device, tap on Software Update, and tap the option titled Download Updates Manually.
