The S-Pen isn’t the only thing millions of Samsung fans all over the world were mourning once the Seoul-based tech giant discontinued the Galaxy Note 7. In addition to the said stylus, Samsung’s problematic phablet also boasted a broad range of other unique features including the Grace UX, an Iris Scanner, and an app called Secure Folder. As the name suggests, this app provided users with a special folder for storing sensitive information. You could use this directory to secure anything from messages, documents, and contacts to emails, pictures, and videos. Once moved to the Secure Folder, these files were only accessible through authentication. The Galaxy Note 7 version of this feature allowed users to access the locked folder with a fingerprint and an iris scanner and was generally a really convenient method of storing sensitive information.
Unfortunately, as the Galaxy Note 7 ended up being discontinued, not many users became familiar with the feature. While it’s reasonable to presume that Samsung will reintroduce this app in the upcoming Galaxy S8, it seems that the South Korean tech giant is also considering bringing it to the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge. Namely, Samsung recently responded to a suggestion sent by a user participating in the Galaxy Beta Program who asked for Secure Folder to be included in the Galaxy S7 build of Android 7.0 Nougat. More specifically, Samsung revealed that it’s currently considering bringing this feature to its pair of flagships which launched in early 2016. Provided that ends up happening, Samsung will offer Secure Folder as a downloadable app for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge sporting the latest version of Android.
Of course, this isn’t an official confirmation by any means, but it’s good to know Samsung is at least considering bringing one of the most popular software features of the Galaxy Note 7 to its older devices. Naturally, even if Secure Folder becomes available on the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge, the said feature obviously won’t support iris authentication seeing how both of these devices are lacking an iris scanner. In any case, more information should follow soon after these flagships receive their Nougat update which is currently expected to roll out by early 2017.
