Not that long ago, the Galaxy Nougat beta became available to Verizon customers sporting the Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge. However, the largest wireless carrier in the country just announced a rather strange decision, as the company decided to discontinue the program. Owners of Verizon’s variants of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge running the beta version of Android 7.0 Nougat were notified of this decision by Samsung via the Galaxy Beta app.
In a short release sent out to Verizon’s customers earlier today, Samsung states that Big Red is planning to stick to the original software for the rest of Samsung’s trial. In other words, Verizon’s customers who haven’t yet downloaded the beta version of Android 7.0 Nougat for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge are now unable to do so. As for people already participating in the beta, they can at least choose to stick with their experimental version of the said software or revert to Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow, the latest stable release of the Android OS currently available for Samsung’s 2016 flagships. Unfortunately, Verizon hasn’t explained the reasons behind this decision, but it’s reasonable to presume Samsung isn’t too happy about it.
On the bright side, this gave a more accurate estimate of when we can expect the official Nougat update to be released for the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge. Namely, the said release explains that everyone who chooses to stick with the experimental version of the software will be upgraded to the commercial release in early 2017. Note that this doesn’t necessarily mean that international variants of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge won’t receive Nougat by the end of this month. All in all, this is curious news given how it isn’t often that carriers decide to discontinue Android beta trials which are specifically designed to help them and OEMs weed out bugs. If you’re a Verizon customer sporting either the Galaxy S7 or the Galaxy S7 Edge, you should have already received the said notice of discontinuation. If you haven’t, expect to see it by the end of the day. All in all, Big Red’s customers looking to enjoy the new Grace UX and other useful features of Samsung’s Nougat variant will have to remain patient for a little while longer.
