Periscope for Android now supports multi-window within the app, allowing you to watch streams on your device at the same time you’re doing something else on screen, such as reading emails, browsing the web, or sending a text. The multi-window support will only work for devices that actually support the feature, which is limited to devices running on Android 7.0 Nougat and above. This does include devices that are running on the Developer Preview as well as any devices which have officially received Android 7.0 Nougat as an over-the-air download.
Multi-window support is just the latest feature to be added into Periscope, although it’s worth noting that even if you have a device that is running on the Android 7.0 or 7.1 Nougat software, you still may have to wait for the update to the app to show up. That being said it’s likely that the update is already available for all users which should enable the feature for those on the correct devices. if you don’t see the update just yet, you can either wait for the update to show up on its own, which shouldn’t be long, or you can grab the latest version of the APK file from the button down below.
Support for Android’s multi-window feature comes nearly a month after Periscope launched support for live streaming 360-degree videos, which is a feature that was added back on December 29th. It also follows the ability to live stream within Twitter without the Periscope app installed on the device, which Twitter added to their Android app a couple of weeks prior to the 360-degree video support in Periscope. While this is great for Periscope users, it does nothing for those who don’t use the app, and it showcases that more apps need to have support for multi-window so that users are able to multitask with the feature a little bit better. Of course, not all apps would function the same in multi-window as the usable screen real estate becomes half of what’s available without it, so there will be come apps which likely never add support to use multi-window in the future, even once more devices have the proper version of Android to access it.
