The Samsung Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge owners who have purchased their smartphones on contract from AT&T may be in for a treat within the next couple of months as the wireless carrier is seemingly preparing for the release of Android 7.0 Nougat around the “beginning of Spring.” This information comes directly from an AT&T representative who shared this information with a customer who owns the Galaxy S7 Edge.
Both the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge have previously started receiving the Android 7.0 Nougat update in a handful of regions including the UK and China. Earlier this week, the Android 7.0 Nougat firmware was also available for download online for the aforementioned devices in the UK and the Czech Republic. Seeing how the international variant is making the jump to Google’s more recent OS version, an AT&T customer and an owner of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge got in touch with customer support and asked about the chances of the AT&T variant receiving the Nougat update in the near future. Long story short, according to a customer representative at AT&T, the carrier has already started beta testing the update and is looking forward to releasing it in early Spring “after final testing.” If all goes well, it’s likely that AT&T will make Android 7.0 Nougat available to the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge owners within the next couple of months. However, given the source of this information, that timeframe shouldn’t be considered official. It’s not impossible for customer service representatives to get some information wrong sometimes, so this report should be taken with a grain of salt.
In any case, Samsung has already finished testing Android 7.0 Nougat on the international variant of the Galaxy S7 and the Galaxy S7 Edge and the update continues to be distributed in select regions. The U.S. might follow suit and with a bit of luck, AT&T customers will enjoy some of Android Nougat’s new features fairly soon, including improved performance and battery life, new multitasking tools, reworked user interface elements, better notifications, a more customizable Quick Settings panel, and a handful of fresh additions specific to Samsung’s proprietary user experience.
