Kyocera has just introduced a washable smartphone. This smartphone is called the Kyocera rafre, and as mentioned in the previous sentence, this is a washable smartphone, which essentially means you can either use foam to wash it or apply body soap on it in order to keep it clean. Unfortunately for those of you who end up being interested in this smartphone, it is available in Japan only, and chances are it won’t become available in Europe or the US. This smartphone was introduced for KDDI, a Japan-based carrier, which is probably the main reason why this phone will remain a Japan exclusive. This is not the world’s first hand-soap-washable smartphone, first such device was introduced back in December 2015, and this is its successor. The Kyocera rafre is still not available in Japan, but it will become available starting from March 2017, Japanese consumers will be able to get it in Light Blue, Clear White or Pale Pink color variants. The phone also comes with resistance to hot water and a touchscreen which can be used even if you’re wearing gloves or have wet hands. This smartphone also comes with some sort of a cooking app pre-installed, as the company is advertising its cooking abilities as well, they’re trying to make sure to let you know that it’s not important if you get the phone dirty while cooking, you can easily wash it. Kyocera’s Smart Sonic Receiver technology is included in this smartphone, and it uses vibrations in order to transmit sound to the eardrum using the device’s display.
This smartphone sports a 5-inch 720p (1280 x 720) display, while it comes with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable internal storage. We don’t know which SoC Kyocera decided to utilize here, but the phone is coming with a 3,000mAh battery. Android 7.0 Nougat is pre-installed on the Kyocera rafre, and the phone comes with MIL-STD-810G, IPX5, IPX8 and IP5X ratings, which essentially means that this phone is water, dust and shock resistant. A 13-megapixel camera is placed on the back of the Kyocera rafre, and a 5-megapixel shooter can be found on the device’s front side. The device measures 142 x 71 x 10.4mm, while it weighs 158 grams. The company did not reveal how much will this phone cost, and we probably won’t know until it becomes available through KDDI.
