The upcoming Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus boast massive screens while having relatively compact bodies sporting dimensions that barely exceed those of their predecessors, new renders obtained by GSMArena reveal. Allegedly coming from the same anonymous case manufacturer that previously leaked a 3D render of the phone, this new set of images includes the actual dimensions of the two phones. It’s been rumored for a while that the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus would take advantage of an unusual screen aspect ratio to achieve a larger screen than what their bodies would normally allow, but these images show just how dramatic the new screen-to-body ratio is.
The Galaxy S8 is 72.20 millimeters wide, 2 millimeters wider than the Galaxy S7. On the other hand, its height has been lessened. While a measurement for the screen was not present, using the Galaxy S7 next to the Galaxy S8 render for comparison and going by scale yields a screen height that’s somewhere in the neighborhood of 140 millimeters. Paired with the width, earlier rumors of a 5.7-inch screen on the base Galaxy S8 model are looking pretty plausible. The whole package is just 7.30 millimeters thick.
On the other hand, the Galaxy S8 Plus is a closer match to the Galaxy S7 Edge as rumors indicate it will sport a 6.2-inch screen. Those reports also seem plausible for similar reasons. The leaked render shows the device is 152.38 millimeters tall, 78.51 millimeters wide, and 7.94 millimeters thick, barely surpassing the thickness of the smaller variant. Furthermore, these leaks corroborate previous renders and rumors suggesting that Samsung is clinging to the MicroUSB standard instead of opting for a USB Type-C port. A mysterious circular hole flanks that port on both phones, which could very well be a 3.5mm headphone jack. If these images prove to be an accurate depiction of the Galaxy S8 and the Galaxy S8 Plus, this will be a pair of fairly interesting devices. In the age in which manufacturers are ditching the headphone jack and have started including USB Type-C ports in their offerings, Samsung is seemingly launching a phone boasting a futuristic design while clinging to many time-tested standards that consumers are already used to.
