The Motorola Moto G4 was originally launched in May 2016 with Android 6.0.1 (Marshmallow) out of the box, but last month the device began its journey towards Google’s latest mobile OS version, Android 7.0 (Nougat). The update was released on the Moto G4 in India near the end of December 2016, and now it appears that Motorola is preparing for the update’s rollout in Europe, as per an official tweet from Motorola Germany.
According to a recent tweet from Motorola Germany, the Moto G4 will receive the Android Nougat update before the end of January. Although the tweet makes no mention of the Motorola Moto G4 Plus, it’s reasonable to suspect that the aforementioned device will receive the same treatment as the Moto G4. After all, last month both the Moto G4 and the Moto G4 Plus have made the jump to Android Nougat in select regions at the same time. As for what Moto G4 / Moto G4 Plus owners can expect from the upcoming software release, Android Nougat introduces a number of new features, including the Multi-Window View which allows users to run two applications at the same time in a split-screen environment. Furthermore, with the addition of Doze On The Go, both smartphones should technically benefit from battery life improvements following the update. Other additions include Work Mode and Data Saver modes, a redesigned notification area, customizable quick settings, and a new settings menu. It’s also worth noting that Android Nougat includes Vulkan API support, which should technically provide a smoother experience when running graphically-intensive applications such as 3D games.
For those who may not be familiar with the Motorola Moto G4 and Moto G4 Plus from a hardware point of view, both smartphones are equipped with 5.5-inch Full HD displays with a resolution of 1920 x 1080, a Qualcomm MSM8952 Snapdragon 617 System-on-Chip, and an Adreno 405 graphics chip. The Moto G4 carries 2 GB of RAM, whereas the Moto G4 Plus is equipped with 2 GB, 3 GB, or 4 GB of RAM depending on the amount of on-board storage (16 GB / 32 GB / 64 GB). They are both powered by 3,000 mAh non-removable batteries, however, despite their similarities, the Moto G4 Plus is the only one to accommodate a fingerprint recognition sensor embedded in the home button.
