Samsung aims to help fight color blindness with an app called See Colors. Although the app itself is certainly a big part of helping people with Color Vision Deficiency see the full spectrum of colors for the first time, Samsung’s See Colors app is not the entirety of their efforts. Samsung has partnered up with a company called Colorlite to create the app and while it will work on smartphones, Samsung notes that it will also be available for their range of TVs that run on the Tizen software.
The app works by first analyzing the severity of the CVD that a person has, and it’s able to detect each person on an individual level so that it produces a personalized set of results. Once the level of CVD is detected the app that can then recalibrate the screen to adjust the spectrum of colors so that it appears the way a person with normal vision would see it, allowing the person with CVD to experience a world of colorful vibrancy unlike anything they’ve ever experienced before.
Samsung mentions that See Colors is already now installed and available on every Samsung SUHD TV from 2016, while the smartphone app is available on the Play Store and the Samsung Galaxy Apps store, although the smartphone app is currently limited to Romania, Hungary, and Bulgaria. They don’t mention whether or not they’ll be releasing the smartphone app to other regions, but it wouldn’t be too far fetched to think that it may launch in other areas depending how well the app does where it’s currently available. Samsung might typically be a company who is associated with just technology, a company who makes TVs, phones, and home appliances, but they do much more than that in reality and although this effort ties into their TVs and phones, it has a much grander purpose. A large number of people are affected by Color Vision Deficiency, around 300 million, and it can have a lasting impact on a person’s lifestyle. The goal with See Colors is to help enrich that lifestyle in whatever way possible. See Colors is also just the latest effort that’s been added to Samsung’s Launching People campaign, which they started a few years ago so they could demonstrate how their technology could improve people’s lives.
