During Sony’s CES 2017 event today, Sony announced a number of new additions to its EXTRA BASS line of audio solutions. In total, Sony announced the arrival of six new products. Four of which are new Bluetooth speakers and the other two are new Bluetooth headphones. While these are different products lines, they are extensions of the same overall EXTRA BASS range and as such, the differences between the different speakers are minimal. As are the differences between the two new headphones.
In terms of the new EXTRA Bass speakers, these are listed as the Sony SRS-XB10, SRS-XB20, SRS-XB30 and the SRS-XB40. Generally speaking, the four speakers make use of a similar design language, although they do differ somewhat in terms of speaker size and battery life. For example, the smallest (SRS-XB20) comes with 42 mm speakers and offers a 12-hour battery life, while the biggest (SRS-XB40) comes loaded with 61 mm speakers and offers a 24-hour battery. It is worth noting here that the SRS-XB10 is a mono 46 mm speaker, which offers a 16-hour battery and marks the biggest design change, compared to the rest of the speakers. While the SRS-XB20 through to the SRS-XB40 all come with varying lighting effects for added value. In terms of price, only the UK and European pricing has been detailed so far, with no information provided on additional regions, including the US. As for the UK and Europe, the SRS-XB10 will be available in May in blue, black, red, green, white and yellow for £60/€70. The SRS-XB20 becomes available in April in blue, black, red, green and white for £100/€120. The SRS-XB30 comes to market in April in blue, black, red, green and white for £150/€180, while the SRS-XB40 will also become available in April, in blue, black and red for £200/€240.
As for the new EXTRA BASS headsets, the two on offer are the MDR-XB950N1 and the MDR-XB950B1 and the most obvious difference between them, is that the N1 model comes equipped with noise cancellation functionality. Other than that, the N1’s come with a 22-hour battery life, while the B1’s come with an 18-hour battery life. Both sets come equipped with 40 mm dome drivers. The MDR-XB950N1 will be available in either black or green and will cost £230/€280, while the more affordable MDR-XB950B1 will cost £180/€220. Both sets of headphones are due to become available in the UK and Europe in April.
