Walmart shoppers may soon be able to buy many items in-store without ever going to a checkout stand. That goal appears to be in testing with the latest Android app released to the Play Store by the retail giant. Walmart is constantly looking for new ways to incorporate technology to both maintain and continue the growth of the company. The company already has a very advanced inventory system in place that is likely being used in conjunction with this new Android app. Unfortunately, Walmart’s Scan and Go application is only usable in one store currently – store #5260 in Rogers, Arkansas – but this could easily spread to all stores if the test is successful. The application was added to the Play Store on Jan. 9.
The app itself seems pretty straight forward. Ordinarily when a shopper goes out to purchase something – especially during busy times and days – there are long lines to contend with. Long lines can feel like a very real hassle when all you’re buying is a gallon of milk or some other small item. With the new Walmart Scan and Go app, a shopper will simply register their desired item to an in-app shopping cart using their Android smartphone or tablet. The device’s camera is used to scan the barcode or the user can add the item manually if he or she is having difficulty finding the barcode. Once the customer has found all of the items they want to buy, they can proceed to the app’s shopping cart to finalize their purchase. The app will also helpfully keep a running total, on-screen, as you shop. Then, a shopper simply needs to show their receipt on the way out the door.
Reviews the application has already received point out that this is a very cool idea. However, the application has a score of 2.7 stars as of this writing, with the negative reviews mostly reflecting the point about how restricted the application is.
