Samsung’s Tizen-powered smartwatches – the Gear S2 and Gear S3 – will soon be seeing thousands of new watch faces as well as a host of customization features as WatchMaker announced that the app will make its way to the two devices within the next two weeks. In addition to partnering with Google and Ticwatch2 to bring the WatchMaker to as many platforms as possible.
WatchMaker is a premium application – there’s also a free version – that currently allows users to download thousands of watch faces to use on their Android Wear-enabled smartwatch. The app also includes serious customization options that would nearly require an entire manual to explain in any real detail. WatchMaker goes beyond the basic customizations available in other smartwatch applications, involving adding pre-made components such as battery level, time, icons, and changing the color of those. The app also allows users to add their own components, animated GIFs, watch hands, screen transitions, and more. On top of that, every component and even the watch behavior itself can be coded using Lua commands to create a nearly endless array of customization options. Watch faces can also be downloaded from a huge community of users and components from those watch faces can often be used in new custom watches. There is even an associated wiki available to help the less tech-savvy get a handle on using the more advanced Lua features. When considering the thousands of very well-made watch faces that are already available for WatchMaker – thanks, in part, to that thriving community of users creating content for the app using the built-in tools, it becomes obvious why having the app come to the Tizen-powered devices is a big deal.
As mentioned above, Samsung’s Gear S2 and Gear S3 won’t be the only devices finally getting WatchMaker support. In addition to the announcement that the two Samsung smartwatches will be getting the application, Ticwatch 2 will be getting WatchMaker support in February/March. While support for Android Wear 2.0 devices will also be added sometime in the near future. In addition to those announcements, the Google Plus post stated that the “new WatchMaker versions will be available at no additional cost for WatchMaker users.”
