Android Nougat finally passed the one-percent distribution mark and is now present on 1.2 percent of all active Android devices in the world, the latest Android Distribution update revealed. Furthermore, Android Marshmallow reached the 30-percent mark seeing how that iteration of Google’s operating system is currently running on 30.7 percent of all Android devices worldwide. While the January update suggested Marshmallow may be the most popular version of the Android OS come February, that still hasn’t quite happened seeing how 32.9 percent of all Android devices are still running some version of Lollipop. However, recent trends suggest that Lollipop and Marshmallow will switch places on the list of the most popular Android iterations in March. As for Nougat, three times more devices are currently running version 7.1 in comparison to 7.0.
Furthermore, the latest numbers reveal that Gingerbread is still holding one percent of all Android users, same as Ice Cream Sandwich which declined a bit in the last 30 days. Jelly Bean still didn’t fall under the ten-percent mark as that version of the OS currently enjoys an 11.3-percent share of the Android ecosystem. KitKat’s popularity is also on a negligible decline as Android 4.4 still accounts for 21.9 percent of all Android devices, down by less than one percent in comparison to January. Lollipop’s dominance is mostly attributed to Android version 5.1 as 5.0 accounts for less than 10 percent of all active Android devices and is declining much more quickly than its successor. Apart from that, it’s somewhat surprising to see Gingerbread’s share of the Android ecosystem not decline in the slightest over the last 30 days.

Overall, while Nougat still doesn’t hold a significant share of the Android ecosystem, that situation should change in the near future as original equipment manufacturers start releasing more devices running Nougat out of the box. A larger set of devices with Nougat is expected to hit the market this spring, and consumers will likely get to see a portion of these smartphones and tablets in a few weeks once Mobile World Congress kicks off.
