Google Home will star in its own commercial during the big game this Sunday, in what AdAge is reporting as a $5 million commercial. The Super Bowl is the most watched sporting event of the year, and companies pay millions for just a few seconds of ad time during the game. This is the most valuable commercial time on TV, since you have millions and millions watching the game around the world, and advertisers want to take advantage of that. So it’s no surprise that Google is spending some big bucks to get Google Home front-and-center during the Super Bowl, which sees the New England Patriots taking on the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday in Houston, Texas.
It may be a bit surprising to some to see Google buying ad time for Google Home, seeing as the search giant has typically been pretty bad at marketing their own hardware, especially with the Nexus line. However, since they launched the “Made by Google” campaign last fall with the new Pixel devices, Google Home and a few other products, Google has really stepped up their marketing game. As they should have, after all, they are an advertising company, in fact they are the largest advertising company in the world. With Google Home being pretty new – it was announced in October and available in November – it’s a good idea to put it in a commercial during the Super Bowl and make more people aware of the device. Especially since Google is looking to compete with Amazon, who has been spending loads of money in advertising their Echo, Echo Dot and Amazon Tap, all of which have Alexa inside.
For those that may be unaware of what Google Home is, it’s a Bluetooth speaker with the Google Assistant inside. Which means you can ask it questions like, how’s the weather, or who’s the president of the US and much more. It’s conversational, so you could ask a follow up question like, how old is he, and the Google Assistant would know you’re still talking about President Trump. Google Home does also integrate with music apps, to stream over WiFi, and smart home products, allowing you to control your home with your voice. The Google Home will have a 30-second commercial during the big game this weekend, although it’s unclear in what part of the game the commercial will air.
