Motorola, now part of Lenovo, appears to have discontinued their two smartwatches. The Moto 360 and Moto 360 Sport are no longer available on their website, and there’s no pricing information available at all. Which seems to point to the fact that the two smartwatches are done for. Last month, Google actually removed the two smartwatches from their own store, which usually signals that the products are being discontinued soon, or that there are newer versions on the horizon. So far, Lenovo has not yet announced a new smartwatch to replace the Moto 360. In fact, Lenovo has hinted at the fact that they may not make another Moto 360, and that’s likely due to the fact that smartwatches just aren’t doing as well as companies had hoped.
Android Wear 2.0 became official earlier this week, and both the Moto 360 2nd Gen and the Moto 360 Sport were listed to get the update to Android Wear 2.0. So these smartwatches may no longer be available for sale, but they are still getting updated to the latest version of Android Wear. Now since these smartwatches do not have NFC, they will miss out on one of the bigger features of Android Wear 2.0, and that is Android Pay. Allowing users to pay for things with their smartwatch, something that Samsung and Apple have bene allowing for quite some time. But there are loads of other goodies available in Android Wear 2.0. While they are getting Android Wear 2.0, it’s unclear if they’ll be getting any updates past that. If they are truly being discontinued, they likely won’t be.
The Moto 360 was the first round smartwatch with Android Wear. It garnered quite a bit of attention, as it was much nicer looking than the LG G Watch and Samsung Gear Live that were announced ahead of it. Then the Moto 360 2nd Gen came along with the Moto 360 Sport in 2015, and they were slight improvements on the original, and still fairly popular. Of course a big part of that was the fact that it had support for MotoMaker, allowing users to really customize how their smartwatch looked. Choosing different casings, bands and even sizes.
