The LG G6 was announced at Mobile World Congress earlier this week in Barcelona, and it has been receiving plenty of praise. One of the more interesting features, one that hasn’t been talked about a whole lot, is the fact that the display LG has on this smartphone is capable of HDR. However, many apps don’t support HDR, or at least they didn’t. Netflix appears to be the first one offering up support for HDR streaming in their app, now seeing as the LG G6 is the only device right now with a HDR display, it only really works on the LG G6.
Prior to this announcement from Netflix, users that wanted to experience HDR streams from the streaming provider would have to purchase a TV that was capable of HDR, which is not cheap. But now, they can experience it in the palm of their hand, as long as they have the LG G6. Of course, you will need to update your Netflix subscription to allow for 4K streaming to get HDR support, but other than that, you should get HDR streams on your LG G6. Netflix’s CEO, Reed Hastings confirmed this at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona this week.
Not only does the LG G6 have HDR 10, but it also uses Dolby Vision, which provides a great looking display for streaming all kinds of content. Whether that content is from YouTube, Netflix, or another streaming provider. The display is also a 2K display or Quad HD+. The reason they are throwing that plus sign around with the LG G6 is because there are more pixels here than what a standard QHD display would have. It’s a 2880×1440 resolution panel here instead of a 2560×1440. And that is because the LG G6 has a 18:9 or a 2:1 (if you know your fractions) display, which means it’s a bit taller than most smartphones out there. Which LG calls their FullVision display. It allowed them to put a much larger display on the LG G6, and still keep it the same size as the LG G5 that they debuted last year. The LG G6 is due to launch in the Spring, although pricing and availability has not been confirmed yet.
