Samsung has just announced their new flagship processor, the Exynos 9 Series 8895 SoC. This processor is built on the world’s first 10nm FinFET process, says Samsung, and even though the company did not confirm it just yet, this processor will almost certainly fuel the upcoming Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8 Plus handsets in some regions. As it was the case last year, chances are that the ‘Snapdragon’ SoC (in this case the Snapdragon 835) will fuel Samsung’s flagships in the US, while the ‘Exynos’ CPU (in this case the Exynos 8895) will do the same in a number of other markets, Europe included.
As already mentioned, this processor is based on a 10nm (nanometer) FinFET process, while the Exynos 8890 (Samsung’s flagship SoC for 2016) was based on a 14nm FInFET process. This is an octa-core processor which comes with four ARM Cortex-A53 cores, and four Samsung’s 2nd-gen custom CPU cores. Now, the company says that this chip offers 7% higher performance, while it consumes 40% less power compared to a 14nm Exynos 8890 SoC. This SoC also comes with the latest GPU by ARM, the Mali-G71. The Exynos 8895 offers support for 4K Ultra HD (4096 x 2160) display resolution for 4K UHD VR, video recording and playback and a maximum resolution of 4K UHD at 120fps. This processor is also the first SoC by the company to ship with a gigabit LTE modem that supports five carrier aggregation (5CA). The Exynos 8895 also offers support for Cat. 16 4G LTE connectivity, it offers maximum download speed of 1Gbp (Cat. 16), and upload speed of 150Mbps (Cat. 13) with 2CA.
On top of all this, Samsung also says that the Exynos 8895 comes with a separate processing unit which for enhanced security, this processing unit will handle mobile payments which use the iris or fingerprint scanners. In addition to that, the chip also comes with an embedded Vision Processing Unit (VPU) which can recognize and analyze items or movements in order to improve video tracking, machine vision technology and panoramic image processing. That is more or less it, for now. The Exynos 9 Series 8895 SoC is Samsung’s most powerful processor to date, and it will go head-to-head with the Snapdragon 835 out in the market, chances are that these two processor will offers similarly impressive performance, but it remains to be seen what happens.
