Sony Xperia Z5, Z3 Plus & Z4 Tablet Nougat Update Resumes

Today marks another attempt to bring Android 7.0 (Nougat) to Sony’s Xperia Z5, Xperia Z3 Plus, and Xperia Z4 Tablet after the software used in the initial rollout had to be pulled. The last update sported a version number of 32.3.A.0.372, along with a number of bugs, including some hitches with playing audio through any app except Sony’s music player. This new firmware rollout is dubbed as version number 32.3.A.0.376, and has already begun making its way to the target devices as part of a slow OTA rollout.

At the moment, the users that have received the updates are reporting no bugs as of yet, including the ones that eventually caused the last update to be pulled. Although, some comments on the update do highlight that there seems to be little in terms of new features. The usual Nougat goodness from Google is all there, but Sony’s cameras do not seem to have received any kind of manual control mode, and Vulkan, a new 3D standard that tops OpenGL and Direct3D in performance, is not on board, despite having already made its way to numerous devices, including the Huawei Nexus 6P, which sports the same chipset and GPU as the Xperia Z5. The security patch is also reportedly still at the December level.

While some Xperia fans may be a bit disappointed with the lack of new features, having Nougat on board as the base of the firmware gives the phones and tablets a number of new features that are worth paying attention to. Such as multi-window mode, and boosts in memory, battery, and performance improvements over Android 6.0 (Marshmallow). Devices that got the previous firmware update should find all of their issues solved once they get this new one, and those who never took the last update and are still on Marshmallow should be able to simply take the newest update without any fuss. Sony has not announced exactly how the rollout will go, but it could be assumed that those who got a hold of the last update could be seeing this one first. In either case, it is expected that all mentioned devices will receive the update in the coming days.
