On Tuesday, ZTE announced that their flagship smartphone, the Axon 7, is now receiving an update to Android 7.0 Nougat and the update also includes support for Google’s VR platform, Daydream. This update makes the Axon 7 the cheapest smartphone with Daydream support, as the others on the list include the Huawei Mate 9 Pro, Moto Z, Moto Z Force, Pixel and Pixel XL. The ZTE Axon 7 gains a slew of new Nougat features with this update. ZTE already has a mostly stock Android version running on the Axon 7, so you’ll see plenty of changes when Nougat is available for your device. This includes things like multi-window, enhanced Doze and even expandable notifications. There’s plenty to love about the update to Android Nougat.
When it comes to Daydream, the ZTE Axon 7 should provide a pretty stellar experience, especially since it has almost the same specs as the Pixel and Pixel XL smartphones that launched with Daydream support. The Axon 7 has a Quad HD display and is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 chipset. With support for Daydream, you’ll now be able to pick up the Daydream View and watch videos in 360-degrees with apps like Hulu and HBO Go. But also play all kinds of games in virtual reality. While Daydream isn’t the most powerful VR platform, it is pretty easy to use, and offers a great experience. And it’s definitely cheaper than picking up the Oculus Rift, HTC Vive or the PlayStation VR from Sony.
The update is beginning its rollout to Axon 7 users around the world right now. So it may take some time before it is actually available for your device, especially since ZTE will likely be rolling out this update in a slow, staged manner. This is quite popular for updates, especially large ones like this. Keep in mind that the Axon 7 is jumping from Marshmallow on over to Nougat, so the update will be very large, and you’ll want to be sure you are on WiFi before beginning the update. Also, if you having issues after the update, it’ll be a good idea to do a factory reset, in case some data gets damaged during the update.
