Android Pay now supports 31 new banks in the United States, as revealed by the recently updated support pages of Google’s mobile payments service. The new additions include the Alcoa Pittsburgh Federal Credit Union, America’s First FCU, First State Bank of Colorado, The Hometown Bank of Alabama, Town & Country Bank and Trust, and TTCU The Credit Union. The full list of the currently supported banks can be seen by following the source link below, clicking on the “United States” option in the drop-down menu that tell you to choose your country or region, then scrolling down and tapping or clicking on the “Other participating banks” option. Note that the aforementioned America’s First FCU only supports Android Pay with its Visa cards, as revealed by Google’s support pages.
With this latest expansion, Android Pay now supports more than 600 banks throughout the United States, including all of the major ones, meaning the vast majority of owners of Android devices in the country should be able to use the service. Nonetheless, Android Pay still has a long way to go until it’s supported by all of the banks in the country. According to the United States Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), there were 6,799 banks in the country as of early 2014. While that figure doesn’t include banks that aren’t FDIC-insured, it’s still an accurate estimate of how many U.S. banks are offering their services to individuals seeing how all commercial banks in the country have been legally required to have FDIC insurance since 1989.
Looking at Google’s recent efforts to expand the support list of Android Pay, there’s a pattern to be observed as the Mountain View-based tech giant has been adding new banks to its service on a monthly basis. With this latest expansion, the Alphabet-owned company added support for 100 new banks in the last three months alone, so it seems that the company is stepping up its efforts to bring its mobile payments solution to as many banks as possible. Due to that state of affairs, at least one new expansion of Android Pay’s pool of supported banks will likely occur this spring. More details on the matter are bound to be available shortly.
