In case you missed it, Philips and TP Vision made an announcement this week which saw them introduce a number of new TVs. In fact, Philips announced no less than 8 new TVs which all come powered by Android TV. These are broken down into three specific ranges, with each model available in at least one size variant, if not more. First up, we have the Philips 7000 series of TVs. These include the Philips 7502, 7272 and 7202. Although the Philips 7502 is certainly being positioned as the flagship 7000 series option. This one will be available in three sizes, 49-inches, 55-inches, and 65-inches. While the 7272 will be available in 49-inches and 55-inches, and the 7202 in just a 43-inch sized model.
Overall, the 7000 series is one which is designed with an ultra slim form and an LED edge lit design, as well as and metal finishes. These are all UHD TVs and so look to offer an improved viewing experience, while being positioned as mid-range priced options. Although as mentioned, the 7502 will be the main one to focus on here as this model is positioned as the leading 7000 option and comes equipped with support for the P5 picture processing engine. Which is said to offer as much as a 50-percent increase in performance, compared to Perfect Pixel Ultra HD engine. Likewise, sound is also a big selling point here as the 7502 comes loaded with a forward firing ‘visible sound’ soundbar, which is powered by a 45W amplifier. The only other mentioned specs at the moment (that are relative to all the 7000 series models), is the inclusion of 16GB internal storage, a quad-core processor, HDR10 support, and of course, Android TV as the main user interface. Which in this case, comes in the form of Android 6.0 (Marshmallow).
Moving on, there is also the new Philips 6400 series. This range is made up off the flagship 6400 model, as well as the 6432, the 6412, and the 6402. The 6482 and 6432 will both be available in a 49-inch model and a 55-inch model. While the 6412 will be available in 43-inch, 49-inch, 55-inch and 65-inch options. It seems one of the main differences between the 6000 and the 7000 is the market positioning as the 6000 range is designed to be the more affordable range in general. Although that aside, the design and the general level of performance is somewhat similar with the 6000 looking to offer a flagship-like viewing experience, thanks to support for the Pixel Plus Ultra HD Engine and Micro Dimming Pro system. Likewise, the 6483 model once again comes with a forward firing ‘visible sound’ soundbar, although on this occasion the amplifier powering the sound is resigned to 25-watts. Which brings us onto the 6402 which is clearly being positioned as the most affordable option from the 6000 series. This one is a 32-inch TV with an FHD resolution. While all the other 6000 options come equipped with 16GB internal storage, the 6402 is resigned to 8GB internal storage. Although, all of the 6000 models listed come running on Android TV, again via Android 6.0 (Marshmallow).
However, if you are after the best in class experience, then it seems the one to pay closer attention to will be the 55POS9002, or more simply, the Philips 9002. This is a UHD 55-inch OLED TV which also comes running on Android Marshmallow and powered by the P5 picture processing engine. This one is designed to offer the best viewing experience, the darkest black levels, and the greatest color variance. As well as support for HDR10 content. In addition, one of the big selling points with this model is the use of Philips Ambilight, which is designed to offer an even more immersive viewing experience. This is the company’s second TV to come equipped with the technology.
Unfortunately, Philips has not provided any details on the pricing yet or the availability of any of the mentioned TV sets. Although it does seem to be the case that the Philips 6402 will be the most affordable, followed by the 6000 series in general. Then moving up in price will be the 7000 series which is then price-superseded by the Philips 9002. Likewise, while these TV sets do come running on Android TV, there are few details (and no official images) on the actual interface, so it is unclear as to the level of customization on offer, or whether this is more of a stock Android TV implementation. Although, as it is Android Marshmallow-based, it should be expected that the likes of adoptable storage will be on offer, as well as Google Assistant functionality – when it does becomes available.
