Best Of MWC 2017: Sony Xperia XZ Premium

Sony’s Xperia XZ Premium is a device that’s beautiful on the inside just as much as on the outside

Just like every year at Mobile World Congress, quite a few new mobile devices were announced this year and this includes Sony’s latest flagship, the Xperia XZ Premium. While the overall design doesn’t stray too far from Sony’s previous Xperia XZ, it brings a refinement that is hard to ignore in the design department and there are loads of hardware specifications to match its pretty exterior, making this a device that’s beautiful on the inside just as much as on the outside.

While it’s nearly impossible not to take notice of the mirrored finish that can be found on both color variations of the Xperia XZ Premium, one feature of the device that isn’t immediately noticeable is the support for 4K content. Sony does advertise this feature, but it’s not something that’s visually noticeable unless you’re actually viewing content that also comes in a 4K format. Luckily, Sony has partnered up with Amazon on this device to provide consumers with a varied spread of 4K-capable videos and movies to watch on the phone, and for those who love their media entertainment on mobile, this is going to be one of the best parts about the device. If a 4K screen seems excessive for a smartphone display, the good news is that 4K isn’t always on, and instead the phone will display content and graphics in 1080p resolution unless 4K content is being showed on the screen. This will help the phone provide a respectable and functional battery life.

It isn’t all about looks here though which makes the Xperia XZ Premium worthy of a “Best Of” award from Mobile World Congress 2017. Sony has incorporated loads of powerful hardware that will allow the phone to compete on the level with the other top flagships that have been announced this year so far. It comes powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 835 processor which is the latest CPU to date to come from Qualcomm, and this CPU is paired with 4GB of RAM and an Adreno 540 GPU for the graphics processing, while also carrying 64GB of internal storage that is expandable up to 256GB via a microSD card, as it’s customary for Sony devices to allow for expandable storage.

Sony is usually associated with having excellent cameras on their smartphones and this year’s Xperia XZ Premium is no exception. Here consumers will find an unparalleled rear-facing camera experience that is capable of shooting video in 4K, which conveniently takes advantage of the 4K screen on the phone, and it also allows users to shoot video in super slow-motion with a frame rate of 960 frames per second. This might not be a feature that is used all the time by a majority of users, but there are those who will definitely make use of it as often as possible and it will certainly be a nice feature to have around from time to time for the creative types that really love a diverse set of photography and video functions. Other features like Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 support as well as the use of USB Type-C give the Xperia XZ Premium a well-rounded set of traits that are hard to overlook. With everything that’s on offer from Sony with this phone, it’s easy to see why it was awarded Best of Mobile World Congress 2017.
