Andy Rubin, the creator of Android, left Google a few years ago and has decided to start a new startup, which was announced in January as ‘Essentials‘. Now, the creator of Android has teased their new smartphone on Twitter, giving us a very small glimpse of what his new startup is working on. In the picture, which is above, you can see the top right corner of the device, which shows a nearly bezel-less display, and it also shows a few icons in the status bar which looks close to stock Android or AOSP (and coming from the creator of Android, we’d expect nothing less).
In his Tweet, Rubin says he’s “really excited about how this is shaping up. Eager to get it in more people’s hands…”, but says nothing else about the phone, or even the name of his new company. Leaving a lot of questions in the air, like what is the phone’s name, when will it be available, and many more. Where this is a new smartphone startup, and not a company that has been around for a few years, it’s likely that this smartphone won’t be ready anytime soon. Seeing as new startups typically experience plenty of delays, some of which are out of their hands. Hopefully Rubin will let everyone know some information about this device in the near future.
Rubin still has a pretty big following of Android fans, after all, he is the one that created Android and then sold it to Google in the early 2000s. Now, Rubin is looking to do the same with Essentials. Earlier this month, it was reported that his company would not be getting funding from SoftBank, after the company had agreed to help them out. But thanks to Apple, SoftBank had to pull the plug. But that appears to not have stopped Rubin and his team, in creating this new smartphone. There’s a possibility that this smartphone could be unveiled or even teased at Google I/O, but that is likely only if Google is working with Essentials on it, and if it features something unique – like perhaps the Andromeda operating system that has been rumored and leaked quite a bit over the last year or so.
