With technology these days, parents have a lot to deal with when it comes to their kids. These days, most kids have at least a smartphone and some even have a tablet and possibly a laptop. The struggle for parents is getting kids off of these devices, at least for a few hours. Additionally, parents are always looking to keep their kids from using or seeing things they shouldn’t be, and Google is here to help. Today, Google launched the Family Link app, which is still in early access form, to help parents keep tabs on their kids.
With Family Link, your child will need a device that is running Android Nougat or higher, and you’ll need to download the Family Link app onto your deice and create a Google account for your child through the Family Link app. With the app, you’ll now be able to control what apps and games your child downloads, as the Family Link app will show a pop up on your device when your child wants to download something. And you can choose whether to allow them to download it or not, from right there on your device. Other features include limiting screen time, and setting a bedtime for the device. So you can set the device to go to sleep at 8PM, so that your child has to put the smartphone or tablet down and get ready for bed. The app does also breakdown the child’s app usage. So you can see which apps they spend the most time using.
The app is currently invite only, so you will need to register and request an invite to use the app. Google hasn’t mentioned when the app will be openly available, but they do mention that they are just getting started with Family Link and are looking for feedback from parents. The app is primarily targeted at parents that have kids that are 13 years of age or younger. Google has developed Family Link as a way for parents to allow their kids to explore the Internet, but still keep them safe, and only allow them to see things that they should be seeing.
