Google is still the top company to work for according to the Fortune 100 Best and has been for the past six years in a row. This survey looks at 230,000 anonymously filled out questionnaires by employees, while also taking into account similar questionnaires aimed at management. With a view to providing an all-round view understanding of what it is like to work at the companies in question.
Founded in 1998 and headquartered in Mountain View, California, Google has over 72,000 employees (including Google’s parent company, Alphabet) and currently has about 1,000 job openings (as of February 2017). One might wonder what makes them such a good place to work – and it seems a number of the reasons include free gourmet food, haircuts, and laundry services. However, it is more than just the free benefits that keep employees happy as Google takes an uncompromising look at the morale of the employees. Google noticed that mothers were leaving the company at a much faster rate, so they adjusted their maternal leave policies and saw a 50-percent reduction in the rate working mothers were leaving. They have Town Hall meetings to discuss race, transgender workers, and “unconscious bias workshops” to foster a friendly and safe environment for everybody to work together.
In a survey called “What Employees Say,” 1,064 employees filled in a questionnaire. The study has a 90-percent confidence level and a margin of error of ±2.9. Employees enjoy the great challenges and rate that factor at 98-percent. A great atmosphere and great pride in the company also received the 98-percent mark. 97-percent felt Google offered great rewards and great communications among employees. Employees even rate their bosses as great 97-percent of the time. Some other things employees commented on – 97-percent said they have “special and unique” benefits, as well as receiving the resources and equipment to do their jobs. 96-percent are proud to tell others where they work, can take time off when needed, and employees are willing to work extra hard to get the job down. To go along with all of these accolades, Google’s parent company, Alphabet, is Fortune’s sixth most admired company after Apple, Amazon, Starbucks, Berkshire Hathaway, and Disney.
