A device manufactured by LG Electronics was certified by the United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) bearing the model number LG-H871. The documents detailing some standard testing procedures that the device passed through were published by the FCC on Monday, February 27. While submitting the device to the agency for testing, the South Korean consumer electronics manufacturer requested confidentiality from the FCC. The request was made on February 13 when the Seoul-based tech giant said it requires six months, i.e. 180 days of confidentiality from the FCC in order to prevent any sensitive commercial information about the device from leaking to the public. The company clearly stated its intentions to release the product commercially after that period is over, which was already implied by the fact that LG submitted the device to the FCC for certification.
The model number labeling the mysterious LG-made device already surfaced online in early February as a part of a Geekbench listing describing a smartphone produced by the South Korean phone maker. The listing revealed that the LG-H871 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 system-on-chip (SoC) and 4GB of RAM, in addition to running Android 7.0 Nougat. Back then, it was assumed that the device in question may be the LG G6 Lite that the Seoul-based company requested to trademark last month. While LG didn’t announce any cheaper variants of its LG G6 flagship during the latest iteration of Mobile World Congress (MWC), the original assumption may still hold some merit, especially in light of the fact that LG requested short-term confidentiality from the FCC in order to get enough time to prepare for the commercial launch of the LG-H871.
Provided that a slightly weaker and more affordable version of the LG G6 is in the works, it’s possible LG will also launch a number of other devices that the company requested to trademark alongside the LG G6 Lite, including the LG G6 Compact, G6 Prix, G6 Hybrid, G6 Young, and G6 Forte. Naturally, the LG-H871 may have nothing to do with LG’s latest flagship. In any case, considering the time frame that the LG gave to the FCC, more information about this mysterious device is bound to follow no later than August.
