The Moto Z Play is now receiving the latest Android security patch, which is the March 2017 patch. Motorola has yet to publish the full changelog for the update, but we will likely learn more about the contents once the rollout is complete. The security patch is being delivered to devices as an Over-The-Air (OTA) update, so it may take a few days or even weeks, before all eligible devices receive the update.
Motorola recommends users to install the March security patch while connected to a Wi-Fi network. Also, it is best to have at least 50 percent of battery left while installing the update, or charge your device during the installation process. If the update is ready for your device, you will receive a notification prompting you to download and install the security patch. However, if you don’t like the idea of waiting for the notification, you may manually check for the update. In order to do so, simply head to the Settings app and tap on About phone. From there, select System updates, and the system will prompt you to download the security patch if it is indeed ready for your device. It should be noted that the aforementioned update is for unlocked Moto Z Play units, so if you are currently using a unit from a carrier, you may have to wait for the carrier to push the update to devices on its network.
The Moto Z Play is a mid-range offering from the Moto Z lineup, though it is compatible with all current Moto Mods. It packs a 5.5-inch Super AMOLED display and is powered by the Snapdragon 625 processor featuring eight cores clocked at 2.0GHz, as well as the Adreno 506 GPU. Under the hood, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage can be found. The device packs a 16-megapixel camera on its rear with laser autofocus, phase detection autofocus (PDAF), and dual LED flash. The front side of the Moto Z Play boasts a 5-megapixel shooter along with a flash. It packs a rather large 3,510mAh battery and supports the proprietary TurboPower charging technology. The Moto Z Play currently runs on Android 7.0 Nougat.
