Nest Gets More Secure, Adds Two-Step Authentication

In this day and age, something that most people worry about is the security of their devices. And now with the Internet of Things becoming a bigger deal, many are wanting to make sure that their smart appliances like a thermostat or a camera, are also secure. Now Nest has taken the necessary pre-cautions to make sure that their users are indeed safe. Today, the company announced that they are adding two-step authentication to their products, specifically their app. This means that it’s going to be a bit more of a nuisance to set up your Nest products (or set up the app on a new phone or after factory resetting your phone) but it does mean that users are going to be safer, and that’s the whole reason for adding this.

The way it’ll work is that when you attempt to login to your Nest account, you’ll get a text message sent to one of your approved devices. This text message will have a unique code that you will need to enter into the app or website, to finish logging into your account. It sounds a bit tedious at first, but it’s actually quite simple. Not to mention the fact that Google has been using this in their accounts for years, and even has it turned on by default for most people. And since Google and Nest are both owned by Alphabet, it makes sense for Nest to finally get two-factor authentication.

Now with two-factor authentication, it means that your Nest Learning Thermostat, Nest Protect and Nest Cam are all safe and protected, and that other people can’t tap into them. Definitely important these days. If you’ve been thinking about picking up a Nest product or two, now is definitely the time to grab one, especially with two-factor authentication being included. Nest’s products also work with Google Assistant and Amazon’s Alexa, so you can easily control them all with your voice, which is a pretty cool aspect to their products. The update is rolling out now, for all Nest users to begin to use two-factor authentication and it is highly recommended.
