Popular multimedia editing app Prisma is adding a Styles Store and a filter-making tool to its existing offerings, but still isn’t interested in monetizing its user base. Prisma’s co-founder Aram Airapetyan told TechCrunch that the company is not even considering charging users “for the time being.” Instead, the new additions to Prisma are intended to help people navigate the app and its many styles and maintain the current user engagement rate. The tool for generating filters, i.e. styles was the most commonly requested feature among Prisma users, the company said. Prisma currently boasts over two million users worldwide and is apparently still tweaking its service in some major ways.
The style-making tool that the firm just introduced allows people to upload any image and use it as a template for a general visual style that they can later apply to their other images. The catch is that this functionality is still in beta and only available on desktops. While Prisma says that uploading an image and converting it into a filter for later use takes around an hour, waiting times can be much longer and the tool will initially only be available to the most active users of the AI-powered app. The existing version of the style-making tool reportedly isn’t particularly user-friendly and features a number of sliders that aren’t labeled and whose effects users aren’t able to preview. Coupled with long waiting times, it sounds like this functionality is still some time away from being truly accessible.
Regarding the Styles Store that was also just incorporated into the popular app, Prisma’s creators explained how that functionality was primarily designed to assist users in finding their favorite styles and preventing them from getting bored while browsing through a few dozen other styles they don’t like or care about. With the addition of the Styles Store, Prisma users are able to download their favorite styles and keep them for future use without looking for them ever again, Airapetyan revealed.
